A Little History of Unicorns
Once upon a time… The Greek historian Ctesias gave us the first recorded description of the unicorn in the 5th Century BC. According to his description, the unicorn was an ass as big as or larger than a horse with a pure white coat, a red head and a single horn in the middle of the forehead. The horn was reportedly a cubit (18 inches) long with a white base, black middle and a flaming red tip. In addition, the horn was believed to hold magical powers. Drinking from a cup made from a unicorn horn was thought to cure a host of diseases and even to nullify the effects of poison.
Because people believed the unicorn’s horn held magical powers, selling unicorn horns became popular in the Middle Ages. Although the horns were likely those of goats or cows and occasionally narwhales, they were often used as drinking vessels or ground to a powder and used in magical potions.
During the Middle Ages, unicorns also began to appear in art and literature. These beautiful creatures were often depicted as mystical beings that brought blessings, divined truth or sometimes rescued damsels in distress.
